The CWD manages and organises interdisciplinary research activities on wind power drives at RWTH Aachen University. These activities include not only fundamental scientific research but also industry-related research and development projects. The scientists at the member institutes involved in the CWD address multi-physical issues related to drivetrains in wind turbines (WT) and are relocated to the CWD to strengthen the interconnection and assist with innovations. Consisting of the heads of the seven interdisciplinary foundation institutes, the executive board is responsibility for planning, usage and operation at the CWD on a scientific and organisational level. To ensure close collaboration with industry, the CWD organizes workshops on a regular base. Among other events, the Conference for Wind Power Drives in Aachen functions as a platform for transfer of results.

The provision of sustainable energy and materials is clearly one of the major global challenges which were identified in the future strategy of RWTH Aachen University. The profile area Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering (ECPE) addresses the two most important pathways to achieve this goal: Improvements in energy and material efficiency and the transition to renewable sources.
